Imagine after your ceremony in the Great Hall, then stepping out, hand in hand with your belevded, of the Priory’s ancient doors as friends and family shower you with confetti. The wind carrying the confetti gently through the air and out to Romney Marsh. Or include your confetti throw in the Enchanted gardens, under the ornate metal gazebo, where nature and romance intertwine. For the gardens, choose a palette of natural petals, like white dried hydrangea, to complement the planting, and let them flutter softly around you as you celebrate your love amidst the blooms.

What is the origin of throwing confetti at a wedding?
The tradition of throwing confetti at weddings originates in ancient times and has evolved through different cultures and customs. Showering the newlyweds with small objects symbolises blessings of prosperity, fertility, and happiness for the couple.
In ancient Roman times, guests would throw grains of wheat or rice over the bride and groom. The confetti was as a symbol of fertility and abundance. Over time, rice became one of the most common items thrown at weddings.
In medieval Europe, people began throwing other natural items on bride and grooms, such as flower petals, seeds, or nuts. Showering them in natural items, continued the symbolism of growth and prosperity. The idea was always to bestow good fortune on the couple as they embarked on their new life together.
The modern use of the word “confetti” comes from Italy. In Italty it originally referred to small sweets or sugared almonds that were thrown at festive occasions, including weddings. Eventually, the term evolved to refer to the colourful paper bits we use today; though some countries still incorporate rice or petals as part of the celebration.
The shift to paper confetti became popular in the 19th century. particularly for indoor ceremonies, where biodegradable or natural petals were more complex to manage.

How to distribute your confetti
Recyclable Paper Cups: Place your paper cups on trays to be handed out by someone. We also recommend the same person also responsible for collecting all of the empties after the confetti toss.
Confetti Station: Create a bespoke confetti station in the Priory’s lobby, offering guests different biodegradable confetti options and real petals. You can personalise the station with jars or bowls. Why not add wonderful smelling lavender or colourful dried petals, including Roses or Delphinium, some of which you might have grown and dried yourself (as Sam has from team E-Lope).
Fresh Flower Petals: Our in-house florist would love to provide beautiful flowers for your aisle confetti. However, if your celebration is indoors within the Great Hall, we recommend choosing lighter colours to protect the wooden floors. Or as an alternative why not be showered on the chequered dance floor in the bar.
Confetti Pony: What could be a more adorable and alternative way of giving out confetti with one of our confetti Shetland ponies at your wedding? Once you know your colour scheme and flowers, working with our in-house florist, House of Mimi Fleur, we can weave them into the Shetland Pony’s manes and tails. Your guests will certainly want their pictures taken next to them.

Do we need confetti for every guest?
Not all guests will participate in the confetti toss, so it’s perfectly fine if you don’t have enough for everyone. Aiming to provide confetti for about 80 or 90%% of your guests is usually sufficient. Although we always love tonnes of confetti!
